EdTech Index FAQs
Since 2012, the EdTech Index (formally EdSurge Product Index) has been the first stop for educators in search of learning technology solutions. There are thousands of edtech products on the market. Vetting them all individually at the district or state level is no longer sustainable or necessary. The EdTech Index is a free, public resource that brings together independent validations from leading education organizations, researchers, and certification providers.
Instead of relying on vendor claims alone, educators and education leaders get a single source of truth: tools evaluated against five widely recognized quality indicators:
- Safe: Research-backed privacy and data security practices that protect students.
- Evidence-Based: Demonstrated effectiveness supported by independent research and evaluation.
- Inclusive: Designed to be accessible and supportive for all learners, including those with diverse needs.
- Usable: Easy for educators and students to implement successfully.
- Interoperable: Works seamlessly with the systems schools and districts already use.
There is no cost for companies to register or update their products on the EdTech Index.
To add your company to the EdTech Index, you must register and update your product(s) through ISTE’s Learning Technology Directory (LTD). After you click “Join Now” and register and submit your product, our team will process your submission for review.
We are currently accepting learning technology solutions that fit into these primary categories:
- Digital Product: any software, or software-enabled application, platform or SAAS for education;
- Hardware/Device: any software-enabled device or hardware design for learning environments;
- Educational Service: any distinct technical assistance provided that uses technology for educational purposes.
We are currently not accepting the following products:
- A product that violates our terms of service in any way or undermines/prohibits learning.
- Products that were not specifically designed for supporting or facilitating teaching and learning.
- Products without privacy policies.
- Physical objects such as pencils, desks, or chairs, unless they qualify as a software-enabled device designed for learning and teaching purposes.

The EdTech Index features carefully selected third-party validation badges from our trusted partners, viewable on our Validations page. While we continuously expand our partnerships, we maintain a focused set of recognized validations. New badges are automatically displayed on product pages upon verification from our partner organizations. To inquire about getting your badges added, or for any questions about the validation process, please contact ltd-info@iste.org.
For general information on badges and the five quality indicators found on product pages (Safe, Evidence-Based, Inclusive, Usable, and Interoperable), please click here.
Validation badges are issued by independent third-party organizations, not by the EdTech Index. Each badge reflects that organization's own evaluation criteria and process at the time of certification. Badges are tied to a specific product and version; as products update or introduce new versions (e.g., free vs. paid or school editions), a badge may not automatically carry over to every version. Certifications can also expire, be suspended, or be withdrawn by the issuing organization, and there may be a delay before that change is reflected on the Index.
Product descriptions, features, and other details not explicitly labeled as third-party validated are self-reported by the vendor and have not been independently verified.
With a Premium Profile on the EdTech Index, solutions providers can stay connected to educators beyond edtech conferences with features that raise product visibility and provide insight into the demographics and interests of decision-makers, including featured product placement, lead generation, an analytics dashboard, and exclusive quarterly reports from ISTE+ASCD communities and events. Please fill out this form so that we can send you more information.
